Fragile Life

Walked up the High Street to lunch in Exeter College and felt the buzz of students in sub fusc coming back for the Examination Schools and caught snatches of other languages as a group of young tourists talked animatedly in the bright sunlight. Then, all of a sudden and without warning, I was overwhelmed by a picture of the buildings around me derelict, and this exhilarating, civilised moment gone for ever. The broken remains didn’t resemble an ancient street in Delos or Ephesus, re-ordered for visitors, but the bombed-out wreckages of Syrian towns, places to run from rather than to restore.
